S.T. Cotter Turbine Services offers both steam turbine services as well as gas turbine services. We often find that we are asked which turbine is more efficient, and it often comes down to the specific operational issues.

Gas Turbines

As the name implies, a gas turbine operates through the combustion of gas. The result of the fuel combining with compressed air creates very hot exhaust gas, which can be in excess of 1,500 degrees Celsius. These gases are produced as a result of the Brayton Cycle.

The gas turbine requires a compressor, combustion chamber, and the actual turbine to allow the hot compressed air to flow over the turbine blades and create rotation. Energy from this process is used to maintain the air flow from the compressor as well as to produce electricity and power.

There is a race among OEMs and gas turbine services to develop consistent 60% efficiency on these types of turbines, with some companies getting close.

Steam Turbines

The steam turbine, on the other hand, uses the expansion of water as it turns to steam to move the rotors. This steam is applied to the rotors at high velocity, and this rotation powers the generator. This, in turn, produces electricity.

The relatively simple design of the steam turbine makes it more efficient to maintain. A steam turbine also offers up to 90 percent efficiency, and sometimes above, for industrial steam turbines. This makes steam turbines the most efficient in most types of applications.
